Description
The Wilson Monument, located on Castle Street in Strathaven, was erected in 1846. It features a square-plan polished ashlar pedestal topped with an obelisk. The pedestal includes a polished ashlar panel that bears an inscription, along with the date displayed on a block pediment above. The base of the obelisk is adorned with an anthemion on one face and stylised crests on either side. The inscription reads: "Erected by public subscription in affectionate memory of James Wilson a patriotic Scotsman who suffered death at Glasgow 30th August 1820 for enunciating those principles of progress and reform by the adoption of which Great Britain has secured domestic peace and consolidated her power among the nations. Born at Strathaven 3rd September 1760."
