Town Mill, Stonehouse Road, Strathaven

Town Mill, located on Stonehouse Road in Strathaven, was built in 1831, extended in 1877, and remodelled in 1935. It consists of two rectangular mills constructed from rubble, with ashlar dressings, positioned at right angles to each other on a steep slope.

The elevation facing Stonehouse Road features a single-storey, three-bay building on the left, which is actually the fourth floor of the mill block. To the right is a two-storey, three-bay house that formerly served as offices and a board room. This house has a central door with a cornice that is recessed, and the ground floor has double windows, although all the window openings have been altered. The two buildings are connected by a frontispiece added in 1935, which includes a tall pend, a millstone above, and an inscription reading "The town mill." The facade has a shallow segmentally raised parapet.

The rear elevation of the building rises to three and four storeys, with the structure to the northeast featuring lying-pane glazing. The mill building to the east has two and three storeys and includes a modern exterior stair on the northeast elevation, also with lying-pane glazing. The southwest elevation has a round-arched door in the advanced southern section, which is accessed by a gangway, along with a gabled loft entrance above. The entire complex is topped with slate roofs. Inside, the board room features a panelled interior.
