Description

The Reformer's Monument in Kay Park, Kilmarnock, was designed by architect Robert Samson Ingram in 1885, with Matthew Muir as the builder. This tall monument features a fluted Corinthian column that stands on a square plinth with chamfered corners. The structure is made of dressed Giffnock stone on a coursed stepped red ashlar plinth, which sits on a base of random rubble.

On the south elevation, there is a later base that leads to a stepped plinth. The lower stage is carved with the inscription: "UNVEILED by the Right Hon. THE EARL OF ROSEBERY, Oct. 17, 1885." The upper stage has an aediculed frame that contains the RM monogram and an inset plaque. This plaque reads: "To the memory of Captain Thomas Baird and Alexander McLaren, as also John Burt, John Kennedy, Archibald Craig and other Kilmarnock pioneers of Parliamentary reform who, in the early part of the 19th Century, devoted themselves with unselfish zeal to the cause of the people. Erected by public subscription 1885." The corners of the chamfered base feature a bell-shaped detail. The monument has an octagonal base topped by the Corinthian column.

The west elevation mirrors the south, with a later base leading to a stepped plinth and bell-shaped details at the corners of the chamfered base. The stone on the second stage is inscribed with "RO. S. INGRAM ARCHITECT" and "MATTHEW MUIR BUILDER." The north and east elevations also follow this design, featuring a later base leading to a plain stepped plinth with bell-shaped details at the corners of the chamfered second stage, topped by the octagonal base and Corinthian column.
