Description

Bronze statue of Sir Daniel Dixon, former Lord Mayor of Belfast, sculpted by Hamo Thorneycroft and unveiled in August 1910 by the Earl of Shaftsbury. The statue depicts Dixon in beard and formal robes, standing on a square grey granite plinth with heavy moulded cornice. The plinth bears an inscription on its front face and three bronze bas-relief panels on the remaining sides, executed in the style of Walter Crane.

The first bas-relief depicts three maidens in flowing robes: one standing figure representing Progress, and two seated figures representing Science and Education. The second panel, initialled HT 1910, shows three standing maidens representing Prosperity (carrying fruit), Belfast (carrying a model ship), and Fame (carrying a trumpet). The third depicts a maiden representing Shipping, carrying a boat and flanked by two seated men representing Labour and Engineering. The statue is signed on the base by Thorneycroft.

Sir Daniel Dixon was Lord Mayor of Belfast during the opening and much of the construction of the adjacent City Hall. He was a politician, timber merchant, chief magistrate, and chairman of the Harbour Board who had personally contributed £20,000 towards municipal entertaining during his five-year tenure as Lord Mayor. Following his death in March 1907, Thornycroft was commissioned to create this memorial.

Thornycroft, one of Britain's leading sculptors at the time and a key figure in the New Sculptural movement, was renowned for his powerful realism. He became the first person to be awarded the gold medal from the Royal Society of British Sculptors, in 1924. The bronze statue, designed in 1909, is described as boldly realistic.

Originally positioned within a large circular lawn in the north-west area of the City Hall grounds, aligned with the central statue of Queen Victoria as part of a five-statue arrangement along the main façade, the memorial was relocated during the 1920s to its current position on the western side of the main façade, next to the statue of Sir Robert McMordie. During 1992–93 the memorial underwent cleaning and repair work.

The statue stands amongst a significant group of high-quality memorials in the grounds of Belfast City Hall, contributing to the historical importance of the ensemble. Four similar standing statues of Lord Mayors face Donegall Place, emphasising the memorial's role in representing Belfast's civic history.
