Description

The Balgonie Arms is a public house located on Main Street in Coaltown of Balgonie, dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later alterations. It is a two-storey building with single-storey wings on either side, constructed in a terrace. The exterior features lined cement render and harl with painted margins, as well as base and eaves courses.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a two-storey central section flanked by single-storey wings, which may have been converted from cottages. To the left of the centre, there is a panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight and a name board. To the right, there are two windows, and to the left, there is another window. The first floor has three irregularly spaced windows, with the Prince of Wales feathers displayed between the first and second windows. The single-storey wing to the right features a three-bay design with a two-leaf boarded timber door and a plate glass fanlight at the centre, along with windows in the flanking bays. The wing to the left has a panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight to the right and a window to the left.

The ground floor windows are timber sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern, while the first floor has modern top-opening windows. The roof is covered with red pantiles and grey slate, and there are coped, harled stacks with clay cans and thackstanes.

Inside, the bar located in the right single-storey wing has boarded timber walls, a timber ceiling, and a timber bar, which also features a brass handrail.

The property is enclosed by a semicircular coped rubble boundary wall.
