Description

The Markinch Railway Viaduct, designed by Thomas Grainger in 1847, is a significant structure featuring ten arches. It has eight main segmental arches and small single semicircular arches at each end on the banks. The viaduct is supported by dressed ashlar piers that rest on pedestal bases, topped with a cornice. The arch rings are also made of dressed ashlar, while the spandrels are constructed from coursed rubble, reinforced with iron tie rods. Below the flat coped ashlar parapet, there is a moulded string course.
