Description
Middle Mill is an early 19th century, three-storey, five-bay rectangular former grain mill, accompanied by a range of cottages that are both single and two storeys high. The mill is constructed of random rubble with stone margins and quoins, featuring a timber lintel, while the cottages are made of dressed ashlar and rubble, with long and short quoins and stone margins, including stone mullions.
The mill is located to the south of the cottages, but its interior has been gutted. The east elevation of the mill has timber at the center ground below a lean-to canopy that extends to the outer left. There is a wide opening with a timber lintel to the right, along with two small blocked openings at the first floor, likely three more to the left obscured by the canopy, and a further smaller opening adjacent to bay four. The second floor features five small blocked openings close to the eaves.
On the west elevation, there are five regular bays at ground level, each with a blocked door, while bay four is obscured by a timber outbuilding. There are four blocked window openings on both the first and second floors, with the latter being small and close to the eaves. The roofing is made of corrugated iron with ashlar coped skews.
The cottages consist of a long two-storey range, with a single-storey cottage to the right and another two-storey cottage further to the outer right. The south elevation shows the two-storey range on the left, featuring a low flat-roofed timber porch at the center with windows in the flanking bays. There are two part-glazed timber doors to the right and two doors and a window to the left. The first floor has a timber forestair from the right leading to a door at the center that breaks the eaves, with a window to the right and two windows to the left. The single-storey, three-bay cottage to the right has a door at the center and bipartite windows in the flanking bays. The two-storey, three-bay cottage on the outer right has a door at the center and windows in the flanking bays, with regular fenestration on the first floor.
The north elevation features asymmetrical fenestration on the terraced range, with a two-storey cottage that has a center window at ground level. The windows in both the single and two-storey cottages have a four-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case. The range to the left has fixed small pane glazing to the right of center at ground level, with other openings blocked. The roofs are covered with traditional pantiles, and there are coped ashlar and brick stacks with some cans, along with ashlar coped skews.
