Description

Haig's Distillery in Markinch is a monumental Art Deco bonded warehouse and bottling hall built in 1937. This five-storey, twelve-bay structure has a rectangular plan and a flat roof, constructed from red and brown brick with painted cement render and stone cills. It features cement band courses, a cill and windowhead course, and an eaves cornice.

On the principal south elevation, there is a raised loading bay at ground level with tall windows in each bay, except for the second bay from the left, which has a sliding timber door beneath a small window. A dominant cantilevered canopy stretches across the full width of the building, embracing the outer corners. The second, third, and fourth floors display a grid pattern created by vertical, stepped dividing pillars, which are interspersed with contrasting horizontal windowheads and topped with the lettering "MARKINCH." The fifth floor features a window band framed by stone cill and lintel courses, with horizontally lined brick divides. The deep wallhead displays the contrasting lettering "John Haig & Co. Ltd." and is capped by an eaves cornice. Flanking the canopy are full-height brick stair and lift towers, which have raised brick pilasters and an eaves cornice. These towers return to the right and left, with central windows on all five levels, including two below the canopy and a smaller window on the fifth floor.

The east elevation consists of nine bays arranged in a grid pattern with concrete banding. The ground level includes a variety of elements such as tall windows, a door, and a loading bay door. Each bay above ground features a bipartite window, except for the sixth bay, which has a first-floor walkway connecting to an adjoining building.

The west elevation has much of its ground detail obscured by additional buildings, but above ground, it mirrors the east elevation's design, with a projecting stack across the fifth bay.

The interior of the former bottling hall space is divided by octagonal pillars and features a trabeated ceiling. The windows throughout the building have a small-pane glazing pattern with vertically aligned astragals and hopper openings in metal frames.
