Description
Coaltown Primary School was built in 1889 by James Gillespie and Scott, with subsequent additions in 1894, 1897 and 1903. It is a single-story, gabled school building constructed of polychrome brick with stone cills. A deep base course and banded cill course are notable features. The windows have brick and concrete mullions and are arranged in both segmental and pointed arch shapes.
The east (principal) elevation has a lower, projecting bay to the left of centre, featuring a bipartite window, a boarded timber door, and a plate glass fanlight set within a pointed arch doorway. A small window sits to the right of the doorway, returning to the left, and another small window returns to the right. There is a three-light, pointed arch window in the gable to the left of centre, and a small gablet to the right containing a narrow, pointed arch window. A broader gable features a three-light, pointed arch window, set below an arrow slit and gablehead stack, with a bipartite window in a slightly recessed bay to the extreme right.
The north elevation includes a lower, projecting bay to the left of centre with a window. There are three windows on the return to the left, although the return to the right is obscured by a modern outbuilding. A three-light, pointed arch window is positioned in the gable to the left of centre, and a single window sits to the right of centre, flanked by gables that each contain three-light, pointed arch windows.
On the south elevation, a lower, projecting bay adjoins a modern outbuilding off-centre to the right. It contains a boarded timber door, a plate glass fanlight within a pointed arch doorway, and an adjacent small window. Two windows are present on the return to the left, and a flat-roofed cellar is located within the re-entrant angle. Gables to the right and left of centre each contain two pointed arch windows, arrow slits and gablehead stacks.
The west elevation shows a slightly advanced bipartite window that breaks the eaves to the right of centre. Flanking bays contain windows, with a wall abutting to the left and a gable featuring a three-light, pointed arch window in the bay to the outer left.
The upper lights of the pointed arch windows are fitted with 6 and 9 panes, while other windows have 2, 4 and 6 pane glazing, all in timber sash and case format. The roof is covered with grey slates, and features coped brick stacks. Other features include ashlar coped skews with moulded skewputts, ball finials, truncated air vents, cast iron downpipes and decorative rainwater hoppers.
There is a single-story, rectangular outbuilding with a piend roof and a timber door to the south. An abutting wall connects this outbuilding to the main school building.
