Description

Elwyn House, located on The Brae in Athelstaneford, is a late 18th century, two-storey, three-bay rectangular house that includes a small single-storey cottage to the north. It is part of a terrace of houses and cottages. The exterior is made of random rubble, which was previously harled, with ashlar margins that have been replaced in concrete to accommodate enlarged windows on the ground floor.

The principal elevation faces west and features a central door with a later lean-to porch. The ground floor has enlarged bipartite windows, while there are three windows on the first floor positioned close to the eaves.

The rear elevation, facing east, is also three bays wide. It includes a central lean-to brick porch with windows on either side. Above the porch, there is a central stair window, and small windows are located close to the eaves in the outer bays. To the right, there is an adjoining pantiled cottage with a timber and glazed door set off-centre to the left and a central Velux roof-light.

Inside, the house has been altered to serve as a children's nursery, with the ground floor linked to the cottage to the north.

The west elevation features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the east elevation has 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is pitched and covered with renewed red pantiles, and it has ashlar coped straight skews and stacks, along with circular clay cans.

The boundary walls include a low ashlar coped rubble retaining wall along the west elevation facing the road and a rubble coped random rubble boundary wall to the southeast.
