Description
This is an early to mid-18th century house with later alterations, situated on Main Street in Athelstaneford. It is a two-storey house with an attic, and originally had three irregular bays. The exterior walls are of sneck harled random rubble, slightly battered at ground level, with painted raised margins. The front door is located to the left of the centre and features a strip fanlight. To the left of the door at ground level is one window, and two windows have been enlarged to the right. There are three smaller windows at the first floor level. The east gable has a single window to the right at first floor level, with a smaller window above in the attic. The west gable has one enlarged window at ground level, and another above at the first floor. A harled lean-to porch addition has been built to the centre at the rear, and the windows have been altered.
The windows are sash and case with plate glass and four-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, with end chimneys and straight ashlar skews that have scrolled skewputts. There is a single-storey rubble outbuilding with a pantiled roof at the rear, which is now used as a garage.
The house is believed to be the oldest in the village and has served various purposes throughout its history, including as an inn, a general store in the 19th century, and a baker's shop. The west gable once housed the town clock, and stonework at the attic storey indicates its former position.
