Description

Lower Braehead Cottage is a pair of single-storey, two-bay workers' cottages dating to around 1780, situated at the top of The Brae in Athelstaneford. They were originally feu from the Gilmerton Estate, as evidenced by a 1784 plan. The cottages are constructed from random sneck harled rubble with raised margins. A central doorway is flanked by enlarged windows, with bipartite windows to the lower cottage. The windows are sash and case style, featuring two-pane upper sashes and single-pane lower sashes. The roof is covered with red pantiles, arranged in straight skews, with rendered chimney stacks.
