Bolton's Cottages, The Brae, Athelstaneford

Bolton’s Cottages are a row of four late 18th-century cottages, with later additions. Two of the original cottages are now combined to form a single house. The cottages are constructed of random rubble, rendered and with enlarged window margins re-rendered in concrete. The central cottages have a three-bay facade with a central entrance door and larger windows on either side, fitted with four-pane glazing. The northernmost cottage retains its original window openings, with wooden lintels above. The southern cottage has double workshop doors and a small window to the right, fitted with six-pane glazing. The roofs are covered in red pantiles with straight skews, and have rendered chimney stacks. The rear of the cottages remains largely unaltered.

Historical photographs from the 19th century show the cottages as part of a cotters' smallholding, and associated outbuildings remain opposite. Records of a Gilmerton Estate Plan from 1784 (RHP 1393) provide further details.
