Bolton's Cottages, The Brae, Athelstaneford

Bolton’s Cottages are a row of four late 18th-century single-storey cottages, with later additions. Two of the cottages in the centre have been combined to form a single house. The cottages are constructed from random rubble, rendered and with enlarged window margins re-rendered in concrete. The central cottages have three bays, featuring a central door and larger windows on either side, with four panes of glazing in each window. The northernmost cottage retains its original openings, with wooden lintels above the windows. The southernmost cottage has double workshop doors and a small single window to the right, featuring six panes of glazing. The roofs are covered with red pantiles, with straight skews, and rendered chimney stacks. The rear of the cottages has undergone little alteration.

Historical photographs from the 19th century depict the cottages as part of a cotter's smallholding, and related outbuildings remain opposite. Records from 1784, including a Gilmerton Estate Plan (RHP 1393), refer to the site.
