Description
Upper Braehead Cottage is a pair of single-storey, two-bay workers' cottages dating to circa 1780 and situated at the top of The Brae in Athelstaneford. The cottages are constructed of random sneck harled rubble with raised margins. A central door is flanked by enlarged windows; the lower cottage has bipartites. The windows are sash and case with two-pane upper sashes and single-pane lower sashes. The roof is covered with red pantiles, featuring straight skews, and the chimneys are rendered. The cottages were originally feu from the Gilmerton Estate, as evidenced by a plan of the estate dating from 1784.
