Description
Bowling Green House, dated 1866, originally comprised two cottages designed to provide homes for retired estate workers. It is situated on Main Street, Athelstaneford, adjacent to the village bowling green. The building is single-storey and has three bays. It is constructed of squared and snecked rubble freestone with grey ashlar dressings. The central bay is advanced and gabled, featuring windows to both the front and rear, and each return has a doorway. Flanking bays also have windows. The north and south gable ends are blank, each with an advanced, quoined flue at the centre. Windows are sash and case bipartites with wooden mullions and a four-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, with overhanging, bracketed eaves, and cope ashlar stacks.
The cottages were built by Kinloch of Gilmerton. After the First World War, Kinloch sold all other cottages in the village except Bowling Green House. It is now administered by Trustees and operates as a village shop and Post Office.
