Bolton's Cottages, The Brae, Athelstaneford

Bolton's Cottages are a row of four late 18th-century cottages, with later additions. Two of the original cottages at the centre have been combined into a single house. The cottages are built of random rubble, rendered on the exterior, with window margins re-rendered in concrete. The central cottages have three bays, with a door in the centre and larger windows on either side, featuring four panes in the windows. The northernmost cottage retains its original window openings, with wooden lintels above. The cottage to the south has double workshop doors, and a small window with six panes of glazing to its right. The roofs are covered in red pantiles with straight skews, and rendered chimney stacks. The rear of the cottages has seen little alteration. 19th-century photographs depict the cottages as part of a smallholding, and associated outbuildings remain opposite.
