Description
This building is a cottage located at Grueldykes, dating from the later 18th century, though it may be older. It is a three-storey, four-bay house constructed of rubble with broad-droved ashlar dressings. The side elevations are also rubble, while the northern (rear) elevation is harled and features ashlar dressings, along with an eaves course.
On the southern (principal) elevation, there is a nine-field-panelled door situated in the center, which is framed by an ashlar porch supported by Doric columns and topped with a pediment. To the left of the door are windows on both the first and second floors, with the second-floor windows being smaller. The bays to the left are spaced more closely together. The northern (rear) elevation has windows arranged irregularly, with a stair window located left of center. The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a slate roof with coped skews and ridge, and brick stacks at the gable ends.
The interior was not seen in 1995.
Adjacent to the main house is a single-storey cottage located to the east of the entrance and north of the house, which has undergone later alterations and additions. This cottage is primarily rubble, except for the harled western elevation that has ashlar dressings. Its western elevation has four bays with windows in each bay, except for a modern glazed door and window to the left in the outer right bay. A modern conservatory is attached to the southern side. The roof is piended slate with coped skews between the inner and outer right bays, indicating that the outer right bay is a later addition, and there is a skylight in the inner right bay. The interior of this cottage was also not seen in 1995.
There is a single-storey garage, possibly originally a stable, made of rubble with later alterations. It features a modern boarded double door in the outer left bay of the eastern elevation, along with a modern concrete lintel. There is also a boarded stable door in the left bay. The garage has a slate roof with coped skews.
The boundary walls and gatepiers are constructed of rubble with coping, and the gatepiers have pyramidal coping.
