Description
Westways and the gatepiers at 11 Langtongate in Duns is an early 20th-century, two-storey, three-bay house that was formerly a shop on the ground floor. The building is constructed from red sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, while the rear is made of brick. It features stop-chamfered arrises and overhanging eaves.
The north elevation facing Langtongate is symmetrical, with a base course. The ground floor is defined by pilasters that are fluted in the center, with composite capitals adorned with owl, cherub, and lion masks. The outer bays contain windows, and there is a set-back doorway that has been blocked with lined render. A blank fascia and cornice serve as the cill course for the first floor, which has three windows.
The east elevation is also three-bay with raised margins. The gabled center bay has a panelled door and a rectangular fanlight at ground level, with another doorway immediately to the right that has been blocked with lined render to create a window. There is a window to the left, and four corbelled brackets above the ground. Each bay on the first floor has a window.
The rear elevation is irregular with two bays. There is a projecting single-storey porch to the left on the ground floor and a bipartite window to the right, along with windows in the first-floor bays. The building features modern uPVC windows, a piend and pitched roof covered with grey slates, and coped brick apex stacks.
The front wall, gatepiers, and railings consist of a low sandstone wall with saddleback coping, three square ashlar gatepiers topped with pyramidal finials, and wrought-iron arrowhead railings along with pedestrian and carriage gates.
