Description

This is an early 19th-century villa, with an addition built in 1875. It is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay classical villa, accompanied by a later single-storey, single-bay wing to the right. The main structure is built from droved and coursed cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, while the side and rear elevations are of rubble construction.

The south (front) elevation features a base course, panelled corner pilasters, and a dentilled cornice with a blocking course. The fenestration is regular. A slightly advanced central bay is defined by dressed ashlar and includes a blank tablet above the cornice. A Tuscan pilastered doorpiece, also with a cornice and blocking course, provides access to a deep-set panelled door, which has a rectangular plate-glass fanlight above. The wing to the east is constructed of stugged ashlar and incorporates a panelled door at its centre, flanked by windows. Above the door is a shield bearing the initials JMDC and the date 1875. The wing’s mansard roof has a pedimented and pilastered ashlar wallhead dormer, with consoles and an anthemion finial.

The west elevation has a gable with a blocked door at ground level and a window above. Edwardian stained glass is incorporated into the lower pane of this window. A gatepier is attached to the left.

The north (rear) elevation is three bays wide, with a stair window at the centre, accompanied by a smaller window directly above it and another to the upper right. The flanking bays have windows to both floors, with the right-hand ground floor window being blind. A later projecting bay is located to the left, with a window on the ground floor and a plain dormer above. A door is situated in the return to the right.

The east elevation features a projecting, blank harled wing with a rubble gable above.

The windows are timber sash and case, with four panes to the front and twelve panes to the rear. Ashlar coped skews are present, along with corniced ashlar stacks which have been rebuilt on the east side. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the building incorporates cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwaterheads.

The interior has undergone alterations.

A coach house is situated to the west, constructed of cream stugged sandstone with polished dressings to the front. It features a base course, cornice, and blocking course, with flanking pilasters framing a carriage door. This door consists of folding boarded and glazed doors, supported by a later rolled steel joist lintel. The side elevation (facing the house) is of rubble and includes a door, window, two-leaf barn doors, and a door leading to the hayloft above. An attached gatepier is positioned to the left, in a similar style to the gatepier on the west elevation of the main house. The roof is piended and covered with grey slates.

An outhouse is located to the rear, with a droved and stugged ashlar front containing a boarded door, and rubble side elevations.

The front boundary is marked by a coursed stugged ashlar wall with cushion coping. A pair of gatepiers are situated at the centre, featuring cornices and shallow pyramidal caps. A similar gatepier is attached to the outer left, connecting to No 46 Newtown Street (which is not listed). Gatepiers also sit adjacent to the coach house and main house. The rear boundary consists of rubble walls and an embankment, providing access to higher ground, and are further defined by cast-iron railings.
