Description

The Boston Free Church School, located at 43 Newtown Street in Duns, was built in 1843. This two-storey and attic building features five bays and is constructed from squared and snecked cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, while the sides and rear are made of rubble. The windows have chamfered reveals.

On the northeast elevation, there is a broad gabled central bay that is slightly advanced and displaced to the left. This bay has windows on both floors and a gablehead adorned with an entwined banner. The flanking bays contain a panelled door, which is modern on the right, set within a roll-moulded round-headed doorpiece featuring a mask keystone and tympanum that contains a large shell. The first floor has large square panels, and to the right, there is a depiction of a burning bush with the banner "NEC TAMEN CONSUMEBATUR." To the left, another banner entwines around the frame and hand, stating "SCHOOL OF INDUSTRY - FEED MY LAMBS." The outer bays have windows on both floors and corbelled gabled stone dormerheads that bear shields.

The west elevation features a gable with windows on the right side at the first floor and attic levels. The south elevation is largely obscured; on the left, it is hidden by No 8 Willis Wynd, and on the right, it is adjoined by a gabled single-storey hall with a tiny roofless bartizan at the apex.

The building has ten 12-lying-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and features gabletted ashlar coped skews, corbelled skewputts, and rebuilt rendered or brick apex stacks, some of which have octagonal cans.
