Description
Ardgowan House Boundary Walls and Gatepiers is a later 19th-century building located at 29 and 30 Shore Road, Port Bannatyne. This symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay house features a gabled design with single-storey, single-bay pavilions set back to the left and right. The exterior is finished in whitewashed render with raised margins and includes a raised base course. The ground floor showcases corniced bowed windows, overhanging timber bracketed eaves, and king-post gableheads. The walls have narrow strip quoins, chamfered reveals around architraved openings, sandstone mullions, chamfered cills, and a pilastered doorpiece. The sides and rear are constructed from harl-pointed random rubble sandstone, with painted margins and rough render on the rear pavilions.
On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a centrally located two-leaf timber panelled door with a round-arched fanlight above. This door is framed by a doorpiece that includes flanking pilasters, a raised keystone, a cornice, and a block pediment. A round-arched window is positioned beneath the gable on the first floor. The ground floor features four-light bowed windows on either side of the entrance, while bipartite windows are aligned beneath the first-floor gables. The south (rear) elevation has a replacement two-leaf timber door in a projecting bay, sheltered by a full-width canopy, with flanking sidelights and a round-arched window beneath the first-floor gable. Bipartite windows are present on both floors in the gabled bays, with a single window in the advanced pavilion to the outer left and a timber panelled door with a single window in the advanced pavilion to the outer right.
The building predominantly features two-pane timber sash and case glazing, a graded grey slate roof, and some original rainwater goods. Corniced apex stacks are located at the east and west ends, with octagonal cans.
The boundary wall and gatepiers consist of a low whitewashed coursed rubble sandstone wall that encloses the site at the front. The gatepiers are square-plan, stop-chamfered, and corniced, topped with pyramidal caps. Decorative iron lamp-stands are positioned on the central piers, and there are replacement pedestrian entry gates.
