Description
The buildings at 7, 8, 14, and 15 Victoria Place, Marine Road, Port Bannatyne, represent a group of three late 19th-century houses forming a stepped terrace on a sloping site. The terrace is subdivided into smaller units and accessible from both the front and rear.
The houses are constructed of coursed rubble sandstone with “cherry-cocking,” featuring tooled cream sandstone dressings. A raised band course runs along the principal floor level, and a lintel course sits beneath the corniced eaves. Cream rubble quoins are present, along with cream rubble surrounds to the polished windows and projecting cills. Pilastered doorpieces add visual interest. The sides and rear are built of harl-pointed random rubble sandstone with stugged red rubble quoins and surrounds to the polished openings, and cast-iron balustraded stairs provide access to the first-floor entries of numbers 14 & 15 and 16 & 17. A more modern railed stair serves numbers 18 & 19.
The north (front) elevation of numbers 7, 8, 14, and 15 features steps leading to a centered, timber-panelled front door with a bipartite fanlight. A doorpiece includes flanking pilasters, a plain frieze, a cornice, a block pediment, and a raised keystone. Single windows are positioned at both floors in the remaining bays flanking the entrance. Three-light canted dormers crown the outer left and right bays. Numbers 6, 16, and 17 are similar in design. Numbers 4, 5, 18, and 19 have steps leading to a double entrance at ground level, consisting of timber-panelled doors (to the left at number 4 and to the right at number 5), each with a bipartite fanlight and a corresponding doorpiece. Single windows flank the central bays at ground level, while single windows are present in all bays on the first floor. A three-light canted dormer is located in the outer right bay, and a larger box-dormer sits to the left of centre.
The south (rear) elevation presents an irregular arrangement of openings at ground level. Balustraded stairs lead to double first-floor entries, complete with timber panelled doors and bipartite fanlights, flanked by single windows. Three-light canted dormers are positioned in the outer left and right bays of numbers 15 & 15 and 16 & 17, while a single canted dormer is found in the outer left bay of number 18. A full-width box-dormer is visible on number 19.
Most windows have predominantly 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, with number 16 having 10-pane lying-pane glazing. Number 5 features a 4-pane upper section with plate-glass lower sashes in timber frame windows. Some replacement glazing is noted at the front and rear, and various skylights are present. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring raised stone skews and replacement rainwater goods. Corniced stone ridge and apex stacks are topped with coped rendered stacks to the west and predominantly octagonal cans. The interiors were uninspected in 1996. A low, coped boundary wall of random rubble sandstone encloses the site to the front, while a random rubble sandstone wall marks the rear boundary.
