Description
Stone House, located at 25 French Mill Lane, dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and has undergone later alterations. It features a wide, low frontage facing the road, constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof that has red tiled ridges. There is a windowless bay at the southern end. To the north of this bay, original entrances to cottages can be found, with a wooden boarded door on the left and a shuttered window on the right, both accompanied by basement windows below. This area is enclosed by 19th-century railings and gates.
The building has a lean-to annexe with a door at the northern end and another addition with a gabled roof to the north of this. The two-storey, four-bay south front is made of rough ashlar, featuring windows that are four panes wide set in reveals, with keystones above the upper windows. A porch with a gabled roof has been removed, revealing a glazed door, while a modern door is located at the left end.
In the southeast corner, a stone rubble wall with stone capping adjoins the house, along with a pier that has peaked capping. To the south of the wall and pier, there are 19th-century railings with rails that curve at the top in pairs, alternating with rails that have spear-shaped finials. The gates are flanked by square standards topped with urn finials. Originally, steps led down from the gates to the garden. The building was once two cottages, and deeds from 1843 mention an occupant who had lived in the house for approximately 45 years.
