Description

This is a later 19th century single-storey L-plan cottage located on the roadside at the entrance of a walled garden, which was formerly an orchard. The cottage is built of red sandstone, with coursed stone on the south elevation and rubble on the sides and rear, featuring stugged ashlar dressings.

The south elevation has three bays, with a hoodmoulded door at the center flanked by windows and a small-pane fanlight above. The gabled return elevations are blank.

The rear wing consists of one bay with a window at the re-entrant angle and has unfortunately been altered with a raised mansard attic. There is also a lower outbuilding to the north with a piend roof, which includes a doorway and later openings.

The cottage features plate glass and four-pane glazing patterns in its sash and case windows, with grey slate roofing. It has crowstepped gables with beak skewputts and paired, rendered and lined diamond end stacks, along with skylights.

The retaining walls and gatepiers are made of rubble and are gablet-coped, connecting with the retaining walls of Seton policies to the east and west, enclosing the walled garden to the north, south of Seton House. There is a low, semi-circular coped wall that retains a small front garden by the roadside, and tall square ashlar gatepiers flank the cottage on the right.
