Gare Cottage, Cumberland Road, Rhu

Gare Cottage is a later 19th-century single-storey and attic cottage located on Cumberland Road in Rhu. It has a rectangular plan and features three bays. The exterior is constructed of rubble with polished sandstone dressings and margins, and it has projecting eaves with exposed rafters.

On the east elevation, there is a central four-panelled door with a plate glass fanlight above it, and a small gabled dormer directly above the door. The flanking bays on either side feature bipartite windows at ground level and bipartite gabled dormerheads above.

The south elevation has a gable with a window at the gablehead and a lower off-centre projection with a half-pitched roof to the left. There is a door on the left and a window on the right return.

The west elevation also has three bays, with a central door flanked by windows. It features gabled dormerheads and a roof-light at the centre.

The cottage has 2-pane sash and case windows, although there are replacement uPVC windows at the ground level of the main elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate and has sandstone corniced apex stacks with octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1993.

The property also includes gatepiers and a boundary wall, which consist of ashlar piers with moulded domed caps and a low rubble wall with semicircular coping. There is a simple iron gate with decorative finials.
