Description
1 Cumberland Terrace, located on School Road in Rhu, dates from around 1870 and consists of a long, rectangular, symmetrical terrace of ten houses. The buildings are two stories high and feature fourteen bays, with the two end pavilion bays set forward. The exterior is finished in white harling with painted ashlar cill band courses, and includes half-pitched dormer heads, gabled timber canopies over porches, and timber mullions and jambs.
The main (south) elevation has advanced, mirror-image outer bays with piend roofs. Each outer bay features a bipartite window at ground level, with a door to the right in the west bay and to the left in the east bay. The doors are four-panelled wooden doors topped with a three-pane letterbox fanlight, and there are simple bargeboards on the gabled canopies over the doors, which are supported by chamfered wooden posts. At the first floor, there are bipartite dormer-headed windows at the center, with a piended dormer head supported on slender wooden brackets. The long range of eight houses is arranged in blocks of three bays, with paired doors at the center bay under M-gabled canopy porches. The doors here are also four-panelled with three-pane letterbox fanlights, although some modern doors have been installed in houses 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9. Above the central doors is a swept-roofed dormer, and the windows are symmetrically arranged in the flanking bays, featuring piended dormer-headed windows at the first floor.
The rear (north) elevation has some alterations, including new windows and swept-roofed dormers. Lean-to garden sheds are built against the rubble wall that bounds School Road.
On the east and west elevations, there are projecting chimney breasts flanking a bipartite window at the center of the first floor, along with a lean-to shelter at ground level. The windows are eight-pane sash and case, with six-pane windows for the swept roof dormer heads, although some modern windows are present at the rear. The steep slate roof is adorned with cast-iron finials, and the coped rendered ridge stacks have tall paired wallhead stacks on the side elevations.
The interior was not seen in 1993.
The gatepiers and boundary wall consist of a rubble boundary wall with harl pointing and semi-circular coping. The wall bounding School Road is higher to accommodate the lean-to sheds. The entrance on Cumberland Avenue features rounded gatepiers with harl pointing, a red sandstone cornice, and a domed rubble and harled cap.
