Description

Seton Mill is likely an 18th century rebuilding of an earlier kiln, featuring an 18th century barn that has been converted for residential use, with alterations made in 1989 by Johnston Erdal. The structure includes a circular-plan kiln and a rectangular granary that are joined at an oblique angle. The building is primarily constructed of rubble, with modern harled additions and alterations from 1989.

The kiln is a two-stage structure, with the kiln fire mostly underground, accessed through a low doorway with steps leading down on the eastern side. There is a grain chute located on the upper stage towards the southwest. The kiln has a conical pantiled roof supported by cartwheel trusses, topped with a zinc cowl at the apex and velux skylights added in 1989. A section of rubble wall connects the kiln to the former mill on the western side, and the kiln floor is intended to be retained.

The granary was repaired in 1989, with walls slightly realigned and rubble reused where possible. Harled brick and breeze blocks were used for replacement walling. The kiln is attached to the southern end of the granary. The western elevation features a doorway and a window, while the eastern elevation has three windows and French windows that were inserted during the renovation. Two gabled dormers were added to the eastern pitch, and there are two windows on the northern gable end, showcasing a mix of rubble and brick masonry, with ashlar coped skews and brick end stacks.

The windows are sash and case style with a small-pane glazing pattern, and the roof is covered with red pantiles, also added in 1989.
