Description
The Vine, located at 43 Magdalen Yard Road in Dundee, is an 1836 single-storey and basement building that features two-storey accommodation in the west and rear sections. This Graeco-Egyptian villa is notable for its remarkable design, with ashlar stone on the south and east elevations and rubble on the north and west.
The east elevation has three bays, with a central entrance that is advanced and flanked by Greek Doric engaged columns in antis. These columns are positioned between single windows that are set in ramped, lugged architraves within recesses formed by angle pilasters featuring simply incised Greek detail. The south elevation has five bays, similarly detailed, with a central bay that is advanced and includes a consoled ramped window between pilasters, approached by steps. The entablature is decorated with wreaths, and the parapet features acroteria over the central bays. The north and west elevations are simpler, with single, bi- and tripartite windows on two floors, accompanied by simple angle pilasters. All windows are sash and case with a 12-paned glazing pattern. The building is topped with shallow piended slate roofs surrounding a central domed metal-roofed cupola, and small square-section corniced stacks.
Inside, there is an octagonal vestibule with niches and a tiled floor. The high-ceilinged principal rooms lead from a remarkable domed inner hall that is lit by a lantern cupola and features paired Ionic columns in the corners. The principal rooms also showcase stencil-decorated doors and doorpieces, lively plaster work, and marble chimneypieces. Outside, there are low garden walls to the north and south with pedestals for urns and statuary, which have been recently removed. There are also higher, curved walls at Magdalen Place, along with two square gatepiers, one of which is consoled, although both have missing tops.
