49 Seafield Road, Dundee

Probably dating to around 1850 and likely designed by George Mathewson, 49 Seafield Road is a two-storey, two-by-three-bay detached villa. The villa is constructed of coursed rubble with distinctive ashlar detailing.

The south elevation showcases a prominent central gable, set forward on pilaster strips. At ground floor, this gable frames a garden shelter, while above it is a balcony and a bipartite window. Flanking the ground floor pilastered windows are dentil cornices, and the first-floor windows are set within architraves. The eaves are supported by brackets. The north elevation features a plain, central gable. The west elevation has a double-pilastered entrance and a ground floor bipartite window. The east elevation is plain. Pilastered gable end stacks are present. The roof is slate covered, with the addition of modern dormers. Sash and case windows are found throughout, some incorporating lying panes.

The interior exhibits an unusual layout, with a narrow passage leading to a central hall and stair. Notably, two principal rooms feature good and unusual plaster cornices with coffers and pendants. Stacks were removed in 1986. The property is bounded by high rubble-built boundary walls and includes Elm Lodge with boundary walls at 6 Magdalen Place.
