Description

Bank House, located at 10 Bank Street in Inverkeithing, dates from around 1820. This two-storey, three-bay villa has a square plan and features a Roman Doric portico on the garden front. The eastern elevation is constructed of coursed ashlar, while the north, west, and south elevations are made of coursed squared rubble. Notable architectural details include droved ashlar quoin strips, droved rybats with margins, stone cills, straight raised margins, and a moulded eaves course on the eastern side. An elevated stone terrace at the eastern front is supported by three vaulted cellars.

On the eastern (principal) elevation, there is a central tetrastyle Roman Doric portico, which was reconstructed in 1992. This portico features paired plain shafted columns and corresponding pilasters, with triglyphs and metopes. The entrance includes a timber panelled door and a margin-paned fanlight, flanked by ground floor windows and Georgian-style cast-iron electric imitation gaslight fixtures added in 1996. The first floor has three windows.

The northern elevation contains central windows on both the ground and first floors. The western (courtyard) elevation features a plain corniced flat-roofed porch, added in 2001, located off-centre to the left, along with ground floor windows in the outer bays. There is a central stair window positioned between the ground and first floors, and two first floor windows near the eaves in the outer bays. The southern elevation mirrors the northern with central windows on both levels.

The villa has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with modern windows introduced on the southern side. The roof is piended, covered with grey slates, and has coped wallhead stacks with octagonal clay cans.

Inside, the hall has been remodelled in a plain neo-classical style, featuring a Roman Doric arched screen made of grey-veined marble, added in 2001. The staircase is faux-marbled with pierced cast-iron balusters and a mahogany handrail. The dining and drawing rooms are adorned with Greek key and foliate cornices. Principal rooms have low panelled dados and plain pilastered chimneypieces, while most secondary rooms feature decorative cast-iron fire surrounds.

The garden terrace is wide and includes cast-iron fleur-de-lis railings, with a stone stair leading south to the lower garden. Beneath the raised stone terrace are three open vaulted cellars secured with iron gates. The property is enclosed by coped random rubble boundary walls that outline a landscaped garden and a traditional rig system. A marriage lintel inscribed and dated "17 JC ?? 13" is set over the exit doorway to the southeast.
