Description
This is a late 17th-century building, dating to 1688, comprising a row of three traditional rectangular tenements, with a gable end facing the High Street. Providence House, the westernmost tenement, is harled with a backset and has moulded ashlar margins, ashlar strip quoins, a moulded doorway, a carved frieze, and crowstepped gables. The two tenements to the east are rendered with painted margins, and incorporate some stone dressings and cills. A forestair provides access to the eastern tenements.
The west-facing (High Street) elevation of Providence House has three bays. A late 20th-century plate glass shop front occupies the ground floor. Two first-floor windows are set to the left of the centre, and there is evidence of a former window to the far right, with visible moulding to the lower half. Three second-floor windows are centred above the first-floor openings. Two square attic-floor windows are visible. Small diamond-shaped openings flank the gablehead.
The south elevation shows Providence House on the left, with a roll-moulded doorway bearing a carved frieze inscribed "16 - GODS PROVIDENCE / IS MY INHERITANCE - 88" and a keystone inscribed "I B". Above the door is a carved oblong oval surrounded by laurel leaves and a central plain shield. A moulded first-floor window sits above the doorway. Adjoining Providence House to the right is No. 16 High Street, and beyond that, the two eastern tenements, which have a slightly lower roofline. A forestair with a lean-to timber porch is positioned off-centre to the right, alongside two windows; a single window is set close to the stair. A first-floor window is located to the right of the porch. Four second-floor windows are closely set to the eaves, with the window furthest to the right being blocked.
The east-facing gable end has two bays, featuring a door to the left and a central ground floor window. There is one first-floor window to the left, and two second-floor windows. Two short ledges are present at the attic floor on the left.
The north elevation features Providence House to the right, with two wide bays and windows to the first and second floors. To the left return is a window to the ground, first, second, and attic floors. The two tenements to the left have four bays and irregular window placement.
The windows are predominantly plate glass in timber sash and case frames, with some 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the north elevation. The building has pitched roofs covered with concrete pantiles and easing slates, with scrolled skewputts to Providence House (which are eroded). The tenements to the east have straight stone skews and beaked skewputts (also eroded). Coped gablehead stacks are present, along with a ridge stack in the centre and a wallhead stack to the northwest.
The ground floor contains modern shop interiors, storage and office accommodation. Living accommodation is located on the upper floors, which were not inspected in 2003.
