Description
West Lodge at Kinmount House is a building designed in the style of Frank C Carruthers, dating from around 1900. This lodge reflects the English vernacular tradition and features timber framing. It has an asymmetrical design, consisting of a single storey and an attic, arranged in a roughly L-shaped plan. A Tudor-arched pend straddles the driveway, and there is an octagonal turret at the rear in the re-entrant angle. The windows are mostly mullioned or mullioned and transomed.
The exterior is constructed from snecked, mainly bull-faced red ashlar, with some parts being stugged, and it features polished dressings. The gables above the wall-heads are white-plastered with black-painted timber framing, and there are some small buttresses. On the north elevation, there is a tall gable to the left that is corbelled over the archway. The former south elevation presents an identical appearance, but it has a hood-mould that continues over the flanking doorways, one of which leads to a porch. An oriel gabled dormer is located on the right side.
The lodge has tall, corniced stacks and slate roofs topped with diminutive scrolled finials over the gables, as well as a facetted and finialed turret. The pend features elaborate wrought-iron gates and arched screens on the north flank. There are low wings to the north, and the structure includes curved bull-faced ashlar quadrant walls with a bell-cast cope, without piers.
