Description
The stables at Kinmount House were built in 1820 by Sir Robert Smirke, with later remodeling in 1899, likely by Barbour and Bowie, as indicated by the dated rainwater heads. The stables have been mostly converted for domestic use by Wheeler and Sproson around 1981. The building features a large symmetrical U-plan with classical details and pediments. It is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings.
The northern range is primarily two stories high, with outer bays that are shallowly advanced and pedimented. The ground level has round-arched openings, and the neo-Georgian glazing was added in 1981. The roof has been swept over an addition to the rear of the northern range. The eastern and western ranges of the stables are single-storey, with the western range still functioning as a stable. Each of these ranges has a pedimented doorway and terminal blocks, with a three-bay southern elevation that features mostly blind round-arched panels and a band at the impost level. The building has blocked eaves, axial stacks, and slate roofs, along with a full-height wing and a small walled court to the west.
