Description

Kinmount House is a Greek Revival mansion built between 1813 and 1820, designed by Sir Robert Smirke with William Burn as the executing architect and John Park as the contracting mason. The house is primarily two to three storeys high and features a tall square central tower. It is constructed of polished ashlar and has elevations with a variety of planes, including tall inner bays and lower outer bays, although it was originally quite plain. Roof balustrades and urns added by Barbour and Bowie around 1900 give it a baroque touch.

To the northwest, there is a large low service court with a conservatory on the southern block, and pedimented gateways to the east of the house, likely designed by Bowie around 1922. The house has a symmetrical but not identical elevation of seven by five bays, with a central twin-pilastered port-cochere on the long northern elevation that features a round-arched tripartite doorway behind it, small bipartite windows above, and flanking narrow semi-bays. The southern elevation has outer tripartite ground floor windows set in segmental-headed panels, while the rest mainly consists of sash windows with 12 or 9-pane glazing. There is a first-floor cill band, a main cornice, and a blocking course, with a concealed roof. An office court is accessed from the west, and there is a piend-roofed corner block at the northeast with blocked eaves.

Inside, most of the original ornamentation is in excellent condition. The central hall is full-height with a dome and first-floor galleries, while there is a shallow-vaulted room to the east and a south-facing room with a compartmented ceiling. The tower features a cantilevered stair, and there are fine marble and timber chimneypieces throughout.
