Description
The Covenanters' Monument and Enclosure, dated 1858, is a classical ashlar monument located at the summit of Windy Hill in Wigtown. The structure features a base course and a pedestal with chamfered angles, which is topped by an entablature adorned with acroteria and stone angle brackets. The monument has an octagonal shaft that tapers and is corniced, culminating in a decorative stone urn finial. One face of the pedestal includes a commemorative panel inscribed to the Wigtown Martyrs, who were Covenanters drowned in the River Bladnoch in 1685 or hanged.
The enclosure consists of spearhead railings that retain a square area around the monument, although some of these railings are now in disrepair.
