Description
The Erskine Monument, designed by Peddie & Kinnear in 1859, is a classical, three-stage, domed structure dedicated to Ebenezer Erskine. It marks the site of his tomb in the former church. The monument is built from sandstone ashlar and stands 30 feet high with a square base measuring 15 feet 6 inches on each side. Surrounding the monument are low coped rubble boundary walls and decorative ironwork railings.
All sides of the monument feature three steps leading up to a fielded plinth with a cavetto cornice. This leads to paired Corinthian columns at the outer corners, with smaller columns flanking a recessed center that contains a round-headed arch adorned with carved spandrels and keystones. Above this, there is a plain frieze topped with a dentilled, moulded cavetto cornice. The third stage is crowned with urns resting on scrollwork plinths at each corner, a set-back drum with a blind, round-headed arcade, and a fishscale-patterned dome topped with an elaborately carved finial.
On the northeast elevation, the frieze is inscribed with the name 'EBENEZER ERSKINE'.
