Description

Bruce Of Auchenbowie's House is a 16th-century end of terrace tenement located at 39 St John Street in Stirling, with alterations made in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is three stories high and features a five-bay arrangement grouped as 3-1-1, including a stair tower.

On the north elevation facing St John Street, the stair tower is located in the penultimate bay to the right and has an entrance on the west side along with four small staggered windows. In the center, there is a small cellar door at ground level with two windows above it. The penultimate bay to the left contains a low door and two windows above, while the outer left bay has one window and two windows above. The outer right bay features a low door in the re-entrant angle formed with the stair tower and two windows above, with the first-floor window having unpainted margins.

The building has timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing, while the stair tower and ground level have four-and-six-pane windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are stacks on each gable with cans. The east gable is adorned with four large crowsteps and weathered coping stones, while the west gable is finished with a plain cope and a moulded roll skewputt. There is also a canted slate-hung, piend-roofed dormer.

The interior features a vaulted basement, although it was not seen during the 1997 inspection.
