Description
Maxwell House, located at the Crichton Royal Hospital on Bankend Road in Dumfries, is a two-storey villa built between 1910 and 1912. It features a near-symmetrical H plan design with shaped gables, constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings. The building has cill courses and a dentilled cornice.
On the east elevation, there is a round-arched doorway at the center with a large glazed fanlight above it. To the left, there are two first-floor windows that rise into a shaped gable with an oculus. The windows on both the ground and first floors are arranged asymmetrically.
The south elevation, facing the garden, has a recessed central block with a full-width verandah that has a glazed roof supported by timber posts. Above the verandah, there are seven first-floor windows. The end returns are advanced and consist of three bays, each featuring paired windows on the ground floor and three windows on the first floor.
On the west elevation, a doorway is located on the far right, with a tripartite window to the left. Above, there are two first-floor windows that rise into a shaped gable with an oculus. There is a squared window bay to the left on the ground floor, topped with a slate roof. A paired window is situated above on the first floor, along with two additional windows on the outer left at both the ground and first floors.
The north elevation features a recessed central block with a symmetrical arrangement of windows.
The interior has not been seen. The villa is fitted with two-pane timber sash and case windows that exhibit a variety of glazing patterns, including 12-pane and 8-pane designs. It has a piended grey/green slate roof, octagonal ventilators with lead roofs, coped wallhead sandstone stacks, and cast iron rainwater goods. There are also modern disabled ramps present.
