Description

Dudgeon House, located at Crichton Royal Hospital on Bankend Road in Dumfries, was built between 1909 and 1910. This building features a central block designed in a Classical style, which is two stories tall and has single-story wings on either side. It is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, and includes a base course, banded rusticated quoins, an eaves course, and architraved windows.

The south entrance elevation showcases a two-story, three-bay central block topped with a pediment that has an apex stack. The entrance features a tripartite doorpiece with panelled two-leaf doors, framed by Tuscan columns and a curved pediment, and is flanked by round-arched windows. Above the entrance, there is a tripartite window on the first floor, with the central window framed by Scamozzi Ionic columns and an entablature, flanked by narrow round-arched windows similar to those below. The windows on either side of the doorpiece have open apex pediments, and there are architraved windows on the first floor above. The rear of the central block has a lower two-story wing that projects from the center.

The wings consist of three bays flanking the central block, which then return on a diagonal line and end in a canted bay to the south. There are modern flat-roofed extensions that abut the diagonal wings.

The interior was not seen, but it features timber sash and case windows with two panes in the upper sashes and a single pane in the lower. The roof has a piended design covered with grey-green slates, with coped ashlar stacks, octagonal lead-capped ventilators, and cast iron rainwater goods. There are also modern disabled ramps present.
