Description
Easterbrook Hall, built in 1934, is part of the Crichton Royal Hospital complex near Dumfries. Designed by James Flett, with input from Dr Easterbrook, the hospital's medical superintendent, it was intended to provide recreational and therapeutic facilities for all patients, representing the culmination of Dr Easterbrook’s vision for the hospital. The building has a rectangular plan, consisting of a symmetrical, two-storey central block and single-storey wings. It is constructed from bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring cill courses, a string course, lintel courses, and a parapet with moulded ashlar pedestals. The windows are architraved.
The west (entrance) elevation displays an eight-bay, two-storey block with a prominent, slightly advanced central section containing paired doorways with panelled doors. The lintel above the doorways incorporates a Greek key motif, with fanlights positioned above. Two windows are situated at the first floor level, with aprons framed by stylized pilasters. A clock is integrated into the parapet. The central section is flanked by three bays, composed of a bipartite window centrally placed between single windows. The return elevations feature round-headed windows on the first floor. Pillars flank the entrance steps, supporting cast iron lamp standards surmounted by simple glass lights. Single-storey, eight-bay wings extend to the left and right of the central block, arranged in three-bay and five-bay sections respectively. Each wing includes a slightly advanced bay with a doorpiece, flanked by bipartite windows, with mirrored arrangements on either side. The north and south elevations have eleven bays each, with bipartite windows in most bays. A lower two-storey wing juts out from the central block on the east (rear) elevation, with a near-symmetrical arrangement of doors and windows.
Original windows are timber sash and case, with twelve panes to single windows and eight panes to bipartite windows. The building has a flat roof and cast iron rainwater goods. The interior was not inspected. Costing $60,000, Easterbrook Hall provided an exceptional range of facilities, including a small swimming pool, reflecting the progressive policies of the hospital’s board of directors over a century.
