Description

The gatepiers and gates along Bankend Road and Glencaple Road, along with the railings and boundary walls, were constructed around 1885 to 1895. They feature two long stretches of high cast-iron railings set on snecked sandstone boundary and retaining walls that enclose the Crichton estate to the north and south. The railings have a simple square plan with a double cross-rail at the top, creating a decorative border filled with scrolled sections. Scrolled supporting brackets are placed at regular intervals.

On Bankend Road, the railings extend from the entrance by Campbell House to the Church gate. At the Church gate, the railings curve and are terminated by gothic sandstone gatepiers topped with steep pyramidal, gableted finials. The railings continue just beyond Brownhall Upper Lodge, which is listed separately along with its gatepiers. There is also a pedestrian gate behind Easterbrooke Hall, featuring tall rusticated gatepiers and a gate that matches the railings.

On Glencaple Road, there is a continuous run of railings from Low Lodge, which is listed separately, to the Brownhall gate, with the boundary wall stepping up the hill. Pedestrian gates are located at Spittalfield Cottages and opposite Ladyfield.
