Description

Kirkcudbright House, now part of the Crichton Royal Hospital, is a two-storey villa built between 1912 and 1914. Constructed of bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, it features cill courses and a dentilled cornice. The building is arranged in a symmetrical H-plan.

The southwest (garden) elevation has a recessed central block with a full-width verandah and six windows to the first floor above. Single windows are set within the re-entrant angles at first floor level. Advanced end returns flank the central block, each featuring a paired window above single ground floor windows. The first-floor arrangement mirrors the ground floor, with a taller paired window set within a shaped gable containing an oculus.

The side elevations are seven bays wide, with four windows and three paired windows at both ground and first floor levels.

The northeast (rear) elevation showcases a recessed central block with a wallhead stack. A doorway is flanked by two windows to the left, with three windows above on the first floor. This is mirrored to the right. A return wing is present to the left, with tall stair windows off-centre and four closely spaced windows to the right at ground level, culminating in a corniced doorway to the left. Three windows are located to the right of the stair windows on the first floor, with a single window to the left. A mirror image wing is present to the right, featuring a wallhead stack to the outer right. The return elevations of the wings exhibit paired windows to the left and single windows to the right at both ground and first floor levels.

The interior remains unseen. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a piended grey/green slate roof. There are octagonal ventilators with lead roofing, coped sandstone stacks, and cast iron rainwater goods. Modern disabled ramps have been added.

Originally known as Kindar and Merrick, then as Kirkcudbright House, the building was constructed as a closed villa for paupers and shares a design with the nearby Mochrum and Monreith villas, which are listed separately.
