Galloway House, The Crichton

Galloway House, located at The Crichton, was designed by Sydney Mitchell & Wilson and built between 1910 and 1912, with renovations completed in 2000. This former hospital ward block features a butterfly plan and a piend roof. The building is two storeys high with a three-bay centrepiece that includes a broad, round-arched entrance and a decorative cupola ridge vent on the roof. On either side, there are long, single-storey angled ward wings with bell-cast roofs and semi-octagonal canted ends. A replacement glazed veranda roof, supported by plain timber posts, spans the front elevation.

The exterior is constructed from squared, snecked, bull-faced red sandstone, accented with polished ashlar dressings. The windows are regularly arranged, featuring single and paired designs with projecting cills. The principal elevation has a half-glazed timber panelled front door with sidelights, set within a broad, round-arched architrave. The rear of the building includes some flat-roofed dormers. The windows are timber sash and case, with 12-pane glazing. There are also some tall, coped wallhead stacks, although most have been removed, and the roof is covered with grey slate.
