Description
The former hospital block with wards 3, 4, and 5 at Bangour Village Hospital was designed by Hippolyte J Blanc, with construction beginning in 1898 and completed in 1907. This large, predominantly two-storey building features 23 bays and exhibits a symmetrical, restrained Scots Renaissance style. It is arranged in a U-shape with five-bay wings extending to the east and west. The exterior is made of roughly coursed, snecked red sandstone, accented with contrasting cream ashlar margins. Key architectural elements include a base course, band courses on the central section, and a cornice. The roof features a mixture of round and pedimented dormer heads, with round-arched, shouldered dormer heads on the east and west wings. There are remnants of former covered verandah wards, along with some later extensions and ramps.
The south (principal) elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a central, piended-roofed, three-storey section with corner bartizans topped with finials. A slightly advanced, canted porch at the ground level has a moulded, segmental-arched doorway flanked by window openings, leading to a recessed entrance door and a blocking course. Above, there is a central shouldered-gabled pediment with a round-arched apex. To the right and left, canted four-light bay windows are present. The advanced five-bay wards feature double-storey covered verandahs to the south, supported by square cast iron columns.
Some windows are boarded, while others predominantly feature a six-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows. The piended roofs are covered with green slates and decorative red ridge tiles, and there are ridge stacks. The interior was not seen as of 2011.
