Description
Annandale House is a 1907-9 building forming part of the Crichton Royal Hospital complex, situated on Bankend Road, Dumfries. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a rectangular, short-leg U-shaped plan, composed of symmetrically grouped blocks with crow-stepped gables. The building is constructed of bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings and features coped crow-steps.
The south (garden) elevation features a slightly projecting four-bay centrepiece with a canted window bay flanked by windows at ground level. There are four windows on the first floor, and a small, pedimented attic window above the centre bays. The flanking bays have lop-sided gables with apex stacks. To the outer right is a group of three ground-floor windows, with a pedimented window breaking the eaves above the central window. A mirrored arrangement exists to the outer left, where a doorway now occupies the centre window bay.
The west (entrance) elevation is four bays wide, with a pitched roof returning as a gable over the two bays to the outer right. A door with a fanlight sits centrally, flanked by a window to the left with a stone canopy above. Windows are situated to the right and left of the door, with four windows above on the first floor. A blind oculus is located in the gable.
The north (rear) elevation is characterised by three bays off-centre to the left, with a centre bay terminating in a wallhead stack. An advanced gabled bay is positioned to the right, featuring a tall stair window. A taller gable with an apex stack is on the outer right, with a single-storey block abutting it. Another advanced gabled bay is to the outer left, also with an apex stack, and a cast-iron escape stair is located within the first floor of the re-entrant angle.
The east (side) elevation presents a four-bay design similar to the entrance elevation, with a door positioned off-centre to the right. A one-and-a-half storey block abuts the outer right side.
The windows are timber sash and case, incorporating two panes in the upper sash and a single pane in the lower sash. The roof is covered in grey/green slate, with coped sandstone stacks and tall, octagonal lead-capped ventilators. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, along with modern disabled ramps.
The interior was not inspected.
Planning for Annandale House began in 1906, following visits by a deputation from the Crichton Royal Hospital board and architect Sydney Mitchell to German asylums and subsequently to Bangour and Kingseat asylums. The original plan involved four villas, Annandale and Eskdale designed as closed villas, while Browne and Dudgeon were intended as hospital villas for patients in a "second department." Annandale House is of a matching design to Eskdale, which is listed separately.
