Description

Hestan House, built in 1924 by James Flett as a nurses’ home within the Crichton Royal Hospital complex, is a three-storey, symmetrical villa of rectangular plan, with an attached single-storey entrance wing to the west. The building is constructed of red sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, incorporating string and cill courses, margined windows, and a blocking course with pedestals and a part balustraded parapet.

The west-facing entrance wing has a symmetrical design with a tripartite doorway centrally positioned, flanked by paired windows. The side elevations are also symmetrical, with four bays each. The main villa’s north elevation features a slightly advanced central bay and flanking end bays, with three recessed bays in between. A doorway is located in the end bay to the left, while the centre and flanking bays each have bipartite windows on the ground and first floors. Remaining bays have single windows. The east elevation, three bays wide, contains a doorway centrally located at a semi-basement level, with bipartite windows on either side. A modern glazed covered walkway leads to this doorway, and bipartite windows are present on the first and second floors above. The south elevation mirrors the north elevation in design.

The interior has not been inspected. The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows, a flat roof, and cast iron rainwater goods. References to the building include an unpublished report by Harriet Richardson, ‘Survey of Scottish Hospitals,’ prepared for Historic Scotland.
