Description

Johnston House, located at Crichton Royal Hospital on Bankend Road in Dumfries, was designed by architect Sydney Mitchell and constructed between 1898 and 1901. This detached hospital block features two storeys and an attic, arranged in a roughly U-shaped plan with a rear court open to the north and a low east wing. The building is made of snecked red ashlar, primarily bull-faced, with polished dressings and string courses.

The west elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing an advanced shaped gable on the right and a tall circular stair turret in the re-entrant angle, which is supported by engaged stumpy columns beneath a finialed bell-cast lead roof. There is also a porch at the ground level. The north gable has a canted end and a shaped gable-head. The south elevation features an advanced shaped gable on the right, six additional bays, two canted windows at the ground level, and a square single-storey porch in the re-entrant angle.

The east elevation consists of eight regular bays with a low range projecting in front. This range includes a central segmental-arched entrance, with a glazed roof behind and ventilators. A higher timber ventilator at the north end is topped with a bell-cast cap and finial. Throughout the building, there are sash windows, mostly small-paned, with plate-glass lower sashes at the ground level. The roof features pedimented dormers, and there are corniced apex and wall-head stacks, some of which have been removed. The roofs are slated.

Inside, the building includes panelled doors within architraves and some cornice plasterwork.
