Grierson Gate Lodge And Gatepiers, Crichton Royal Hospital, Bankend Road, Dumfries

This is a late 19th-century (circa 1890) gate lodge and gatepiers, likely designed by Sydney Mitchell, forming part of the Crichton Royal Hospital complex on Bankend Road, Dumfries. The asymmetrical lodge is a single storey with an attic, exhibiting Arts and Crafts detailing, notably in its mullioned windows. It is constructed of snecked, bullfaced red ashlar with chamfered reveals. The north elevation is asymmetrical, featuring an advanced gabled bay with skewputts beneath a steep-pitched, parabaloid gablehead. The main roof sweeps over a tripartite section to the left and over a timber verandah to the right, where a doorway is located. An east gable features a block finial, while the main roof extends over a west-facing dormer. An axial stack rises from the structure, and the roof is clad in slate, with piended and gabled sections that sweep over bracketed eaves. The square gatepiers are topped with pyramidal caps and linked by a curved low coping with wrought-iron railings.
