Description
Lynehurst is an early 20th-century, two-storey and attic villa located on Carlops Road in West Linton. This square-plan building features a gabled design with a projecting canted corner bay topped with a bell-cast roof and adorned with black and white half-timbering. It is prominently situated on high ground to the north of the village. The exterior is constructed from rock-faced, squared and snecked red sandstone rubble, complemented by polished ashlar dressings.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, includes a segmental-arched doorway with a moulded architrave and hoodmould, flanked by a pair of round-arched windows to the left. Above the doorway is a moulded string course, followed by a five-light window with a pilastered frame and dentiled cornice, and a four-light window above it. The gable features a timber bargeboard and overhanging eaves.
To the east elevation, there is a later addition of a glazed timber flat-roofed conservatory, which is set on the original red sandstone rubble base that once supported a timber open frame veranda. A French door on the first floor opens onto the conservatory roof. The north elevation includes a single-storey and attic wing with a piend roof.
The villa predominantly features leaded glazing in its timber casement windows, which have chamfered angles at the upper panes, along with some octagonal windows at the dormer level. The roof is covered with small red tiles arranged in gradations, and there is a variety of ridge, end, and wallhead stacks, all with moulded coping and clay cans. The building also has cast iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the ground floor rooms are enhanced with decorative cornicing. The principal ground floor rooms feature moulded timber fireplaces with decorative overmantels, which include illustrative Chinese glazed tile insets. The staircase is fitted with timber balusters and a timber handrail.
